Jim Hunter was honoured at Buckingham Palace this week for his work promoting grassroots football in Cumbria and dedicated his medal to friend and former team coach Nigel Pritchard.

Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, presented Jim, who is chairman of Carlisle’s Crown Newlaithes Football Club, with his medal.

Jim said: “Without Nigel’s involvement with both the club and myself this award would never have happened.

“He also put me forward for another award for my work with the Cumberland FA three or four months ago just before he died which I dedicated to him as well.

Jim was one of around 150 people honoured at the palace reception.

He was nominated as part of the FA’s community awards programme to recognise outstanding achievement in grassroots football.

Jim was also a spectator when the first ever football match to take place at Buckingham Palace got underway between two of the oldest clubs in the country – Civil Service FC and Polytechnic FC.
