SEWER WORKERS GET SOCCER CLUB ON THE RIGHT TRACK
Road works might be a motorist's worst nightmare, but for one Carlisle football club they're a dream come true.
Excavators and compacting equipment have transformed the access track at Crown Newlaithes' ground in Rickerby Park - courtesy of contractors working on United Utilities' huge city sewer scheme.
The 100m long track was once a narrow pot-holed menace for players, coaches and visitors to any of the club's 16 teams.
But by re-laying and widening the track contractors DCT, who are working for United Utilities, have made it better than ever.
Club chairman Jim Hunter said: "We're very fortunate to have such a great ground but the track was letting us down. It's on the flood plain and was always pot-holed. We have 16 teams, including girls teams and a senior side. That's more than 150 players alone. It was very difficult for people to drive down.
"Now it has been properly made-up and even widened in places so we can use it for extra car parking on match days."
Re-making the track took two diggers and four lorry loads of highways grade stone donated by DCT and Thompsons of Prudhoe. Meanwhile fencing was supplied and installed by TL and VM Armstrong and agricultural contractor Paul Davidson, while Graeme Walker made and fitted a new gate.
The club also received support from the Cumberland Show Committee and Carlisle City Council, who maintain the park and gave permission for the work to go ahead.
DCT is working on a multi million pound scheme in the middle of Carlisle to upgrade the city's sewers and help prevent flooding. The project is part of United Utilities' £2.9 billion five year programme to improve water and wastewater services and protect the environment.
DCT site manager Craig Shuttleton said DCT was pleased to be able to help out.
"DCT is part of the Considerate Contractors scheme which means we like to help out the communities we work in. I think the track looks a lot tidier now. It will be better for everyone who uses the park," he said.
The picture shows Craig Shuttleton & Steve Christer of DCT with Dougie Burns, club secretary and some of the clubs players at the completion of the work.
Tesco Cup Northern Regional Finals – Crown Newlaithes U16 Girls
Almost 45 players and supporters travelled in style as the U16 girls of Crown Newlaithes represented Cumberland FA in the Northern Regional Finals of the Tesco Cup at Manchester. The team, who had beaten Harraby Catholic Club 2-0 in the County Cup final at Gillford Park, was donated the use of a luxury, executive coach, courtesy of Eddie Stobart director Dale Foster. If that wasn’t generous enough, Dale drove the party down himself!
Twelve county champions from the North of England were split into three groups of four teams, with the group winners and best runner-up going through to the semi-final knockout stage. Playing as Cumberland, Newlaithes were drawn against the county champions from West Riding (Lepton Highlanders), Cheshire (Halton Girls) & Liverpool (Tranmere Rovers). The matches were only 10 minutes each way, with 3 points awarded for a win, 2 for a score draw and 1 for a no score draw - so the emphasis was definitely on goals.
The pitch that had been allocated to the group was flat in one half but then sloped downhill with a sever dip towards the end, which made quality football quite difficult.
First up was West Riding. The West Riding were sharp to close down space and didn't give any time on the ball at all. The entire game was quite frantic, with no real control from either team. The short match duration made it very difficult to build any kind of rhythm and shots were few and far between. The final score was 0-0.
The next game was against Cheshire, a strong, physical side with a number of skilful individuals. Having watched their first game, the Cumberland players knew exactly what to expect. Although Cumberland began to get into their stride, Cheshire’s direct play kept them on their toes. The Cumberland defence did a tremendous job to keep Cheshire out, with Katie Marrs in the Cumberland goal making several excellent saves. For all Cumberland’s attempts to play 'proper' football, a long ball through the middle, set Laura Owen on a chase against two Cheshire defenders. The advancing Cheshire keeper looked to be favourite as the ball ran down the slope towards the opposition box but Laura nipped in to clip ball with the outside of her left foot, over the keeper and into the net. The remainder of the half suddenly seemed like an eternity but Cumberland held out for the victory.
So it was down to the wire going into the final round of matches; Cumberland were in the best runner's-up position with 4 points but needed to get something substantial from the last game against the group leaders Liverpool, who had won both of their matches so far. Liverpool's style was more refined and more akin to Cumberland’s normal passing game. This meant that Cumberland were allowed more time on the ball and they had the upper hand for much of the first half, resulting in a number of excellent shots on goal - notably left-footed strike from Laura Webster that unfortunately, went straight to the keeper. The score was 0-0 at half time and the tension was mounting. Liverpool stepped up the pace in the 2nd half but could not break down the resolute Cumberland defence, with captain and sweeper, Jade Williams in full control at the back. Cumberland’s best chance came when they were awarded a free kick, 25 yards out and just left of centre. Faye Comber struck a fierce, curling shot that just flew past the right hand post. Despite a late flurry of activity, the game finished 0-0, which meant that Cumberland had a final tally of 5 points - would it be enough?
Sadly it wasn't as news filtered through that two teams had finished with 6 points in the other groups. Some of the players were disappointed as they felt that they could have done better. Nevertheless, the girls from Crown Newlaithes had done Cumberland proud as they returned home as runners-up in their group, undefeated and having not conceded a goal against some of the best teams in the North of England - all of this after a 125 mile trip and having been up since 5 o'clock in the morning.

Also congrats to Manager Eddie Williams and Assistant Graham Ostridge for training such a great team.
U16 County Cup Final - Winners & Losers
Congratulations to the U16 Girls for winning the League and County Cup double. The team beat Harraby 2-0 in the County cup final and beat the same team 4-0 in the league to seal the title. The two teams are pictured with their medals after the County Cup final, which was held at Gillford Park (click on the link for a feature and action pictures on the Cumberland FA Website http://www.cumberlandfa.com/News/2009/04/TescoUnder16GirlsCountyCupFinal.htm The team now goes forward to represent Cumberland FA at the Northern Regional Final in Manchester on April 25th. The team has also qualified for what will be an all Newlaithes League Cup final to be held at Brunton Park against the Crown Newlaithes Jules. As far as we know, this will be the first ever girl’s match to be played on the full-sized pitch at Brunton Park. Well done to both teams!!!

Please speak to Fred Gill before you book yourself a pitch at the sheepmount and he will advise you if our pitches are playable or not. The Sheepmount's pitches are very expensive and the club cannot justify the cost if we can play at Rickerby.

Skegness Tournament 16th - 19th May 2008
Under 14's Champions
A fantastic weekend was had by our 2 U14's girls teams at Butlins, Skegness.
Both teams were in holiday mode but still played very competitively in the Foxes cup.
Julies team eventually won the tournament to receive a trophy of world cup proportions. With Chelsea also winning the Molten Ball Award for shot of the Tournament. A 20 yard screamer against the Pinks, which was only contested by one other shot which was by one of Tom's team, Chloe's thump from the halfway line which left the Goalie no chance!
Tom's side, supplemented by 3 younger players from Doug's team, finished third and were the only team to take points off of their older colleagues, being beaten only once in the tournament.
The presentation night was fantastic, lots of glam, bangs and excitement, and the Crown Newlaithes girls were the noisiest with both teams cheering for each other.
The camaraderie over the weekend was incredible, with both teams and parents already planning next years trip.
All players went for free on this trip after a massive fund raising effort.
Many thanks to www.gdmhosting.com for sponsoring the Pinks with the smartest polo shirt of the event.
Under 14's Pinks finished Third

Congratulations must go to Crown Newlaithes Under 12's Girls 'The Pinks' who today were crowned:
League Champions for the 2007 - 2008 Season.
After a fantastic performance in a league play-off against a battling Carlisle City, after being tied on points when the league finished. This is a massive achievement especially after not having a full squad most of the time during the early part of the season, as well as having three players who had never played football for a team before!!!
It was also a big learning curve for the management team as well as Dawn had never managed before!
So congratulations must also go to Dougie & Dawn, your a credit to the club as well as the girls.
You can read a match report by going to the Pinks section in the Season 2007-2008 archive or by clicking here
